Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch can be justly considered a timeless timepiece, because it is a true masterpiece of horological engineering. The Rolex Oyster was introduced in 1926 and it was the first dustproof and waterproof watch. In 1910 Rolex obtained the first official chronometer certification awarded to the movement a wrist watch by the School of Horology in Switzerland. So they developed a case and a special winder to release the first waterproof watch.
The brand continued developing of water resistance of the watch case, however a problem remained – the winder. Finally, the company bought the rights to a patent for a screw-down winder that was proposed by Perret& Perregaux. As the result the new Oyster with fully waterproof and a double locking winder was introduced in 1926.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches were really great, but they had one imperfection – the winder that had to be unscrewed in order to wind the watch. If the owner of the timepiece forgot to screw the winder back in tightly, the watch lost its water resistance. Fortunately, in 1931 Rolex solved the problem by introduction of the Perpetual self-winding movement.
A watch with self-winding movement features an internal rotor that is a semi-circular metal plate that rotates back and forth with any movement of the wrist. Thus it rewinds the mainspring that powers the timepiece. This idea was first introduced in 1770 by Abraham-Louis Perellet, but head of research and development at Rolex perfected the mechanism proposed by the Swiss watchmaker. Due to this invention the crown was necessary only for occasional time adjustments so water resistance of the watch became much more reliable.
Thus in quite short time of less than 30 years Rolex introduced three novelties: the first certified chronometer wristwatch, the first waterproof watch case and the first self-winding wristwatch. However, that was not all. In the end of the World War II, in 1945 the company invented a date-display mechanism and released the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust.
Due to so great achievements Rolex became the world leader in its market. In 1990 Rolex Oyster was recognized as “The Watch of the Century”.
