Purebred Dog Breeds into the Twenty-First Century: Achieving Genetic Health for Our Dogs
Extremely interesting essay written by Jeffrey Bragg from Canada, including a discussion on The Fallacy of Breed Purity, A Century of Nineteenth-Century Dog Breeding, Lessons from Population Genetics, and New Structures for the Dog Fancy. It is an excellent and scholar reflection on the problems that affect canine breeding all over the world, on the role of the Kennel Clubs stud books and on the role of the breed clubs in promoting the welfare of their breeds. To avail the importance of the author's reflections we quote:
Thereafter, one way of proceeding might be to strengthen and empower the breed clubs. They should be granted responsibility and autonomy: responsibility for the welfare of their breeds, and autonomy to make the judgments and decisions necessary to fulfill that responsibility. It should also be ensured that the breed clubs are fully representative of all breeders, by making breed club membership a requirement for anyone wishing to register stock he has bred or imported.
